Surfing tips

If you are having problems surfing the web or just want to have a more enjoyable surfing experience here are some tips, these are things I have found usefull after years of programming, web design photo editing and CAD drawing ( if you already are a master surfer I'm sure you already know all this)

  1. Get Firefox! Firefox is the most versatile browser with tabbed browsing and extensions to tailor make your browser for any purpose, it also seems to have less security vulnerabilities than IE (internet explorer) + It interprets CSS correctly !

  2. If you are planning to get a new (LCD) monitor don't throw out your old CRT one. If you have space on your desk and a realtively new graphics card you can double your desktop space, and maybe your productivity too. What you do is set the monitors side by side, plug the LCD monitor into the DVI plug (digital video interface make sure the monitor you buy has one) , and the old CRT monitor into the VGA plug, go on display properties>settings and set up your monitor's there. Its easy as windows is geared towards multiple monitor setups. A more detailed account here

  3. Even on a 15" monitor you can have space => Increase your screen resolution from 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768 if the text gets to small just increase it in '>display properies>appearence>font size' choose large or even extra large. This will increase your desktop area and maybe give you that extra space you need. (do not fiddle with the dpi settings it will mess up the display of programs)

  4. If you have an LCD monitor it runs best on its native resolution, for web browsers you can set a minimum font size. In firefox you do this by : '>tools >options>content>fonts and colors>advanced>minimum font size' . In IE you do it by '>view>text size'

  5. During browsing when you want to open a new tab in firefox: 'ctrl+left click' , in opera: 'shift+left click' , IE doesn't have tabs but will open a new window with 'shift+left click'

  6. If you annoy people by sending overly large picture files to your friends and family here is a little program for you . It can make any size thumbnail/picture you want, just be carefull to designate the correct 'save in' directory.
